Hands-on experience in the criminal justice field


Public Safety has established a Law Enforcement Explorer’s Post in the town of Cortlandt for youth interested in law enforcement careers.

Explorers have the opportunity to see some of the county police specialized units in action, including the Marine, Aviation and Mounted Units. Field trips include visits to the Westchester County Police Forensics Laboratory, the Police Academy and the New York City Police Museum.

The Explorer Post is affiliated with the Westchester-Putnam Council of the Boy Scouts of America and is open to young men and women between 14 and 20.

"The Explorer Post gives young people hands-on experience and exposure to the criminal justice field," said WCPD Detective Thomas Camerino, the post’s adviser. “Along the way they will learn, have fun, face challenges and discover whether a law enforcement career is right for them.

The program seeks to provide:

• Career training and guidance to youth interested in working in law-enforcement
• Social activities, such as out-of-state trips and sporting events
• Commmunity service opportunities, such as participating in neighborhood cleanups and assisting at parades
• Personal fitness training and information on proper nutrition
• Outdoor and team-building activities.
